The Brazilian cat Mimi gave birth to three puppies, as well as three kittens, which did not survive, local media said.
Mimi's owners believe that a neighbourhood dog is the father of her offspring.
Scientists from the Institute of Biological Sciences of the University of Passo Fundo have taken blood samples of the cat after accusations that the owners have made up the story in order to gain fast money.
"If the puppies prove to have 78 chromosomes, they are dogs. If they have 38, they are cats," Geneticist Adil Pacheco of the Institute said.
"But I seriously doubt they are feline. Every characteristic about them is canine", he added.
It's not uncommon for mammals to nurse young from another species. The cat gave birth in a field it is likely that she has inherited the offspring of a nearby female dog who had recently given birth, Pacheco said.
