Bulgaria: Munching on the Banitsa Photo by Yuliana Nikolova (Sofia Photo Agency)

A violent death is a public event, Patricia Cornwell writes in one of her books, explaining that violations on the defenceless dead only begin with their murder. And though she talks of all the details of the victim's life presented before the jury, in Bulgaria, where juries do not exist some media have chosen to trust that role upon society.

True, we are supposed to be the watchdogs, but where do you draw the line? The number of shocking murders seems to be increasing in Bulgaria, and the victims, all kids, continue to suffer after their death. The photo of a brutally raped four-year-old was circulated in the media, along with gruesome details about the whole ordeal. And when it turned out that the murderer of an 8-year-old was a boy aged nine, some media didn't think twice about reporting the full name of the kid and turning his family environment inside out.

Had this been a regular case I would say kudos to the investigative reporter, who went to all the troubles to get the scoop. But in this case, the one pegged as a murderer is just a kid. True, he has committed a horrible crime. True, he might be a hardened criminal already. But he is just nine years old. What he did now seems bestial but therapy may have helped him overcome the horrid acts in his past and grow up a normal human being. Now, however that chance has been taken away. There is a reason why juvenile records are sealed and it is that some may actually redeem themselves. This is also why media have pledged to thread lightly whenever children are involved - a vow often comfortably forgotten.

Severed body parts, torn corpses - for a country that isn't at war with anyone except its own demons, Bulgaria sees quite a lot of it all slapped on the front pages. It may be what the public wants, but it may also be what it's just used to getting. There is a saying in Bulgaria: "the crazy person is not the one eating the banitsa', but the one who served it to him in the first place."
