The Black Dahlia, the most expensive movie ever shot in Bulgaria, kicked off the traditional film festival in the beautiful and romantic Venice.

The latest film of Brian de Palma was shot by US moviemaker Nu Image, the company that acquired 95% stake in Bulgaria's state film center at the beginning of July.

The shooting of the movie began in April in the town of Pernik and continued in Sofia. The budget of the production exceeded USD 50 M. The Los Angeles film producer has repeatedly said it wants to use the Bulgarian state film studio Boyana to vault beyond its action-flick niche and into films with Oscar potential.

Black Dahlia's credited cast includes Hollywood superstar Scarlett Johansson, young Hollywood diva and Oscar winner Hilary Swank, Josh Hartnett and Aaron Eckhart.

The movie tells the grisly story of the murder of a young aspiring Hollywood actress that has intrigued, mystified, and even disgusted the city of Los Angeles for more than half a century. The case, notoriously, attracted several false confessions, and later surfaced more interest when James Ellroy wrote The Black Dahlia in 1987.

A total of 21 films are competing for the prestigious Golden Lion award at the 63rd International film festival. All the movies will receive their world premiere at the festival - the first time that has ever happened here.

French Actress Catherine Deneuve is the President of the International jury. She and her six-member jury will have the difficult task of choosing the film that will be honoured this year.
