Triple Cripple

by Petya Bondokova

Where it ends usually depends on where you start - or at least according to a popular saying. Bulgaria's three-way governing coalition is about to prove it right. Formed a year ago after long and painful chaffering, the socialists, the centrists and the Turks-dominated side continued to go down the same bumpy road. Statements about the need of unity and compromises for the sake of EU membership have emerged as mere camouflage for the horse-trading inside the coalition. Now when they have to gear up for the President election, tension is showing off once again, as the centrist SIINM are apparently unwilling to back Socialist choice Georgi Parvanov. Ironically, their partnership inside the Cabinet won't make it to the Presidential office, too. And no, coalitions are not a bad thing. When partners share common values and goals, and are ready to sacrifice personal interests for a common cause, it's a fruitful process. Not an easy one, though. Let's hope our coalition will use the next three years and learn the lesson.
