German Leaders Cement Coalition Signing Pact

Germany's conservatives and social democrats have signed an agreement that cements a new grand coalition government and clears the way for conservative leader Angela Merkel to be elected Germany's first female chancellor. The main signatories included Merkel and the new Social Democrat chairman Matthias Platzeck. At the ceremony, Merkel said her aim was to make sure that Germany is among Europe's top three countries, Deutsche Welle reported. The signing ceremony, which comes exactly two months after an inconclusive general election, gives Germany what is only its second grand coalition government.
