EU Aids Fire-stricken Portugal

Urgent appeals from Portugal for help to battle wildfires across the country have prompted EU Member states to dispatch fire-fighting aircraft. Spain and France have each sent two water-dropping aircraft and another is due to arrive from Italy on Monday. Germany said it would send three police helicopters with experts to help around 2,700 Portuguese firefighters tackling around 27 blazes in wood and farmland. The fires have left at least 15 dead and 140,000 hectares destroyed.
