Pope Benedict XVI is due to visit the synagogue in Cologne on the second day of his trip to his native Germany. The visit will be the second time a head of the Catholic Church has entered a Jewish place of worship. Pope Benedict XVI was greeted by loud cheers as he stepped out onto German soil for the first time on Thursday. He was welcomed by representatives of the German government, including President Kohler and Chancellor Schroeder and his wife.
