Sesil Karatantcheva of Bulgaria has edged past Britain's Amanda Janes with an extraordinary 7-5, 6-7 (6-8), 7-5 victory at Wimbledon.

In her first Wimbledon, the 15-year-old Karatantcheva had to use the potent groundstrokes and efficient serves that earned her a place in the quarter-finals of this year's French Open after defeating the tall British serve and volleyer.

Both girls battled hard in the late afternoon sunshine and the crowd witnessed a dazzling display of high intensity grass court tennis.

The young Bulgarian, who made it to the French Open quarterfinals earlier this year, is now facing second-seeded Maria Sharapova of Russia, Wimbledon's Champion of last year.
