Famous conceptual artists, Bulgaria-born Christo and his wife Jeanne-Claude were conferred the Doris C. Freedman Award, a yearly honor given to a person or organization "that greatly enriches the public environment."
The award is named after Doris Chanin Freedman, founder of the Public Art Fund, which aims to bring art into public spaces by commissioning works, curating exhibitions and sponsoring lectures.
"You are great artists, and I officially will declare you great New Yorkers," Mayor Michael Bloomberg said when presenting the award, a miniature version of "The Alamo," the cube-like sculpture by artist Tony Rosenthal that sits in Astor Place.
Christo and Jeanne-Claude began wrapping New York Central Park at the beginning of the year and unveiled their USD 20 M art installation on February 12. "The Gates" remained open for 16 days with a total of 7,500 16-foot metal frames with saffron-colored fabric erected throughout the park at 15-foot intervals.
"The Gates" attracted 4 million visitors to Central Park and generated USD 254 M for the city economy.
