Romania's new government has announced that it would appoint ethnic Hungarians as governors of three provinces with significant Magyar populations. Prime Minister Calin Tariceanu said they would head the local governments in Covasna, Bistrita Nasaud and Maramures, adding that the appointments reflect a changed attitude towards minorities. The major part of the ethnic Hungarians in Romania live in the region of Transylvania. Following the end of World War I, the 1920 Trianon Peace Treaty confirmed the cession of Transylvania to Romania. At the moment 7% of the population of Transylvania is Hungarian.
