Sweden's prolific striker Henrik Larsson will miss the World Cup qualifier against Bulgaria because of a knee injury.
The match is due in March next year.
Monday's surgery has shown that the injury could keep Larsson out of the field for six months.
The Barcelona superstar has disclosed that he was even contemplating retirement.
"Right now everything is just so grim and tiring. There are a lot of thoughts moving through my head. I had really hoped it would not be so serious," Larsson told Helsingborg Dagblad on Tuesday.
