The number of people who died in Tuesday's earthquake that rocked northern Morocco exceeded 560, latest figures showed on Wednesday. There are also reports of more than 300 injured. The first shock, with a magnitude of 6.3 on the Richter scale, was felt as far away as in southern Spain. Several aftershocks followed as hospitals were struggling to cope with the flood of injured people, and rescuers continued to discover more victims in remote villages that were also struck by the disaster. On Wednesday search and rescue teams stepped up a frantic hunt for survivors, as international aid poured into a region still trembling with aftershocks.
