UN Official Killed in Uzbek Plane Crash

The UN's top official in Uzbekistan was among the 37 people killed after a passenger jet has crashed near Tashkent as it prepared to land in thick fog. Richard Conroy, a 56-year-old British-Australian citizen, also an official with the UN Development Programme, was based in Tashkent. Reports said the plane belonged to a local Uzbek airline and that Uzbek President Islam Karimov had been to the site of the crash near the capital of the Central Asian country, according to ITAR-TASS.
