Mariana Kotzeva has become the Acting Director-General of Europe's statistics body, Eurostat, as of the beginning of this year, the agency has said.

In a press release dated January 24 (three weeks after Kotzeva assumed office), Eurostat says her appointment "follows the retirement of Walter Radermacher, in charge of Eurostat from August 1, 2008 until the end of last year."

Kotzeva joined Eurostat as a special adviser (Adviser hors classe) in April 2012, to become Deputy Director-General two years later.

"Prior to joining the European Commission, Ms Kotzeva was the Head of Bulgaria’s National Statistical Institute."

"She held a number of high-level consulting posts in the Bulgarian and foreign administrations and led international projects for the United Nations and the World Bank. Ms Kotzeva has a Master's degree in economics and a PhD in statistics and econometrics."
