Bulgaria Celebrates Day of Education, Culture, Slavonic Alphabet
Bulgaria is celebrating on Tuesday the Day of Bulgarian Education and Culture and Slavonic Alphabet.
A Bulgarian architect has made a documentary about the Glagolitic alphabet, the oldest known Slavic alphabet, daily 24 reports.
Plamen Miryanov, 27, has shot the film inside a derelict church in northwestern Bulgaria and the Prohodna cave in Stara Planina.
The Glatolitic script was created in the 9th century by Saint Cyril, who along with his brother Saint Methodius was sent by Byzantium on a proselytizing mission to Great Moravia.
It was subsequently used for a while in Moravia (but was abandoned after the brothers died), Bulgaria (which later switched to Cyrillic, created by a disciple of Cyril and Methodius) and Croatia (which gradually phased it out between the 12nd and the 20th century).
Bulgaria honours St Cyril and St Methodius and their work every year on May 24.
