Bulgaria: Bulgarian Culture Minister Rashidov Proposes to Macedonia Joint Memorial at Kaimakchalan BGNES

Bulgarian Minister of Culture Vezhdi Rashidov proposed to his Macedonian counter-part Elizabeta Kachanska for the two countries to commemorate together the anniversaries of the battle at Kaimakchalan peak and erect a joint memorial.

This happened during the official visit of Rashidov to Macedonia, reported the Ministry of Culture. “We want this Bulgarian initiative to be carried out in accordance with all legal requirements because it is being offered in order to commemorate the memory of soldiers who died at Kaimakchalan during World War I,” said the Bulgarian Minister.

“Such a memorial will be a clear expression of the dignity of the two countries without hurting anyone’s feelings. Let’s unite around what connects us and the memory of those who died,” added Rashidov.

Relations between the two countries have been strained ever since a Macedonian citizen posted a video of himself destroying a Bulgarian memorial plaque. It turned out that the initiative for the setting up of a plaque was on the part of Bulgarian military and was not agreed upon with Macedonian authorities.
