22-year old Syrian Jaber Albakir who was arrested on terrorism charges was preparing an attack on one of the airports in Berlin.
He had been followed by intelligence services since September, after US and French services alerted their German colleagues about a planned attack against infrastructure sites in Germany.
Initially, Albakir planned to attack trains but later changed his intentions and prepared to attack one of Berlin’s airports.
The authorities announced that they managed to identify the attacker on Thursday. During a large-scale police operation in the city of Kemnitz on Saturday, Albakir managed to escape.
