Svetlan Kichikov, the current head of the the border police ships, has been reappointed to take over the border police directorate of Bulgaria, Interior Ministry officials have said.

Kichikov, 49, has been working for the ministry since September 1992. He has spent his entire career at positions relating to maritime border security.

His predecessor, Antonio Angelov, stepped down earlier in August at the request of Prime Minister Boyko Borisov, alongside one of his deputies, Yotko Andreev.

The development occurred after a TV investigation revealed a public tender had assigned the transportation of irregular migrants to migrant accommodation centers to a company whose previous owner had been reportedly arrested for migrant smuggling.

Kichikov was introduced to the media at a briefing of the ministry's Chief Secretary Georgi Kostov, his deputy Georgi Arabadzhiev, and Deputy Interior Minister Filip Gounev.
