The security environment in the Balkans in the context of the migration crisis in Europe has been in the focus of a meeting of Bulgaria’s Interior Minister Rumyana Bachvarova and her German counterpart Thomas de Maiziere in Berlin.
Bachvarova, on a working visit to Germany, has also discussed with de Maiziere possible additional support to Bulgaria from Germany and the EU to bolster border security and highlighted the need to find a common European solution to the migration crisis, the interior ministry in Sofia said in a statement on Thursday.
The Bulgarian interior minister has also listed the latest measures of the government aimed at improving border security and combating illegal migration.
Bulgaria spends huge resources to enhance the security of its borders which form part of the external border of the European Union, Bachvarova has said. She has reiterated Bulgaria’s position that a coordinated EU response is needed to stem migration flows across the external borders of the bloc, according to the statement.
Thomas de Maiziere and Rumyana Bachvarova have also discussed the creation of a new structure within the Bulgarian Interior Ministry, which will be tasked with combating illegal migration and people smuggling.
German federal police has a similar unit for counteracting illegal migration which Bachvarova will visit as part of her visit, according to the statement.
