Serbia's government has approved the establishment of joint military and police teams that will be deployed at the borders with Bulgaria and Macedonia to control the inflow of migrants.
The decision has been taken following a cabinet meeting that was held late on Sunday evening.
"The task of the police and military forces will be to prevent the illegal entry of migrants coming from the Republic of Bulgaria and the Republic of Macedonia, as well as to bring to justice the human traffickers in the territory of the Republic of Serbia," the Serbian government's website says.
Serbian media had earlier reported that a "significant" number of migrants from the Middle East and Africa entered the country from both of its neighbors on a daily basis.
The press office quotes Serbian Prime Minister Aleksandar Vucic as saying earlier last week that a cabinet meeting that the migrant crisis was very serious in Serbia, with 2699 people having been registered in the country since Sunday morning.
Of these, more than 85% are migrants from Afghanistan and Pakistan, he is reported as saying.
