British Prime Minister David Cameron has announced that he will step down by October after the UK voted to leave the European Union in a historic referendum.

David Cameron said in a statement that he was likely to have resigned by the time of the Conservative Party conference in October, the BBC reported on Friday.

Cameron also said that he had informed the Queen of his decision to carry on for the short term before handing over to a new prime minister by the time of the conference.

It would be for the new prime minister to invoke Article 50 of the Lisbon Treaty, which would give the UK two years to negotiate its withdrawal, Cameron said, according to the BBC.
