Police Detain Six Foreigners in Overnight Operation at Refugee Centers in Sofia
A recent police operation conducted in refugee centers across Sofia resulted in the detention of six foreigners, as announced by the Ministry of the Interior
As many as 1116 people from 13 countries sought protection in Bulgaria in May of this year, the State Agency for Refugees (DAB) has said.
The figure is similar to the one for April, when 1103 people submitted applications.
DAB's website shows 89 people were granted status last month, 51 (from two countries) of the accepted applications being of refugee candidates and 38 others from 3 countries involving a humanitarian status.
Those denied refugee status amount to 49 people from 14 countries, the agency has added.
May's statistics suggest the total number of people seeking protection for the first five months of the year has risen to 6421 people, with 249 approved refugee applications, 180 approved humanitarian applications and 180 refusals.
The tendency of citizens of Afghanistan and Iraq to have submitted the biggest number of applications was kept in May, when 2859 and 2256 people from the two countries applied respectively, followed by citizens of Syria (748), Pakistan (367) and Iran (63).
