The migrant flow from Turkey to Greece’s Aegean islands has fallen sharply since March, when Ankara’s deal with the EU to curb migration to Europe went into effect, the International Organisation for Migration (IOM) has said.
Just 1,465 migrants and refugees landed in Greece by sea in the 31 days of May, fewer than the daily arrivals on this route in both January and February. There were 67,415 arrivals to Greece by sea in January; 57,066 in February; 26,971 in March and 3,650 in April, according to the IOM.
Just seven people arrived on June 1, the IOM noted in a weekly report on migration.
An estimated 205,509 migrants and refugees entered Europe by sea in 2016 through end-May, according to the IOM. This compares with 91,860 arrivals in the first five months of 2015.
Most migrants, 156,657, have arrived in Greece along the Eastern Mediterranean route, compared to 40,297 in January-May 2015.
