Inside Bulgaria's Easter Celebrations: Traditions Passed Through Generations
Today marks the joyous celebration of Easter, one of the most significant holidays in the Orthodox Christian calendar.
A protest against the 60 % planned increase in the price of the ticket for public transport is scheduled to take place in the Bulgarian capital on Monday.
The participants in the protest, which will be held in front of the building of Sofia municipality at 18 o'clock (EET), will express their discontent with the decision of the municipal council to increase the price of the ticket from BGN 1 to BGN 1.6 starting from June 1. The price of ten-ticket batch is also set to increase from BGN 8 to BGN 12.
This is not the first protest against the unpopular decision and a total of 42 complaints have been filed with the administrative court.
Sofia Urban Mobility Centre, the municipal company operating public transport in the Bulgarian capital, warns that the old BGN 1 tickets will be no longer valid starting from June 1.
Passengers with old tickets will be able to exchange them for new ones by paying extra BGN 0.6.
Sofia municipality informed that the number of bus conductors will be increased and more ticket inspections will be carried out in the late hours of the day.
The controllers will be more often accompanied by police which will ensure their safety in case of conflict with passengers.
This measure is taken due to the expected increase in the number of passengers traveling without tickets.
There will also be a double increase in the fines imposed on passengers traveling without tickets.
Passengers traveling without tickets or with the old ones will be fined BGN 40, while those not wishing to pay on spot will be issued with BGN 200 fine.
