Inside Bulgaria's Easter Celebrations: Traditions Passed Through Generations
Today marks the joyous celebration of Easter, one of the most significant holidays in the Orthodox Christian calendar.
There was 15 % increase in the number of foreign tourists visiting Bulgaria during this year's Easter holiday compared to 2015.
The figures of the tourism ministry was presented by Tourism Minister Nikolina Angelkova in an interview for Darik radio on Saturday.
The number of foreign tourists amounted to 350 000 – 400 000, with the visitors coming mainly from Romania, Greece, Macedonia and Serbia.
Approximately the same number of Bulgarians made trips abroad during the same period.
Angelkova expects rise in the number of foreigners visiting Bulgaria around the end of May and the beginning of June when another holiday period is coming up.
The Day of Bulgarian Education and Culture and Slavonic Alphabet is celebrated on May 24, followed by the rose festival which marks the beginning of the harvest period in the so-called Rose Valley.
The rose festival is expected to attract visitors from Japan, South Korea, China and Asian countries in general. Last year, the rose festival was visited by more than 200 000 – 300 000 foreigners.
Despite the relatively warm weather, Bulgaria recorded 4.5 % increase in the number of tourists during this winter season. The corresponding figure last year was 8 %.
According to Angelkova, this shows that Bulgarian winter tourism is gaining increasing popularity abroad.
All three main ski resorts – Borovets, Pamporovo and Bansko registered increase in the number of tourists.
The tourism minister reiterated that the forthcoming summer season is expected to be a successful one as well.
