The "oligarchs and mafia" affected by a crackdown on smuggling and other measures are seeking political support to make up for incurred losses, Bulgaria's Prime Minister Boyko Borisov has said.
"Have in mind that all of these oligarchs, mafiosos, who for years have taken in money, just think what damage is being done on them... All of them will avail themselves of any political opportunity for support that is being given to them," Borisov has said, according to the transcript of Wednesday's cabinet meeting. He has not given any details as to which political forces could offer such support.
In his words, the mafia is "interested in a lack of government, because then the smugglers and oligarchs are taking these billions they are used to receiving, no laws will be passed because there will be no Parliament, and this is a wonderful environment for the corruption and mafia".
Borisov has estimated that revenues to the state budget for January are expected to be some BGN 900 M bigger than their value of the same month of 2015.
He has pointed to this as a sign his government is quite successful in dealing with corruption and smuggling.
This comes against the backdrop of repeated suggestions over the past weeks that a plot is being played out aimed at destabilizing the government.
