The Bulgarian authorities have banned the traffic of trucks over 12 tonnes across the country with the exception of Burgas and Varna regions after more than 24 hours of snowfall, NovaTV reported on Sunday.
The ban doesn’t only apply to the easternmost regions of Varna and Burgas where rain fell.
Trucks over 12 tonnes have also been banned from the three motorways leading out of Sofia - Trakia, Hemus and Lyulin until snowploughs cleared the snow cover which is about 30 cm thick, the TV channel said citing an official of the government’s Road Infrastructure Agency.
Meanwhile, the snowfall in Sofia Region has stopped and the situation was expected to return back to normal around noon time (1000 GMT).
Car traffic remains restricted on minor roads in the regions of Shumen and Targovishte, in northeastern Bulgaria, and in Vratsa, in northwestern Bulgaria. First class roads linking the city of Shumen with Ruse and Silistra, on the Danube River, have been completely closed for traffic due to snowdrifts.
Train services have been suspended in eight sections due to snowdrifts on the tracks, NovaTV said.
