Bulgaria’s Ombudsman Maya Manolova will propose to parliament to appoint former Justice Minister Diana Kovacheva as her deputy after Kovacheva scored best in a public hearing among five nominations put forward by local NGOs.
Kovacheva was nominated by the Bulgarian branch of Transparency International where he served as a longtime CEO before being invited to become Justice Minister in the first government of Prime Minister Boyko Borisov in 2011.
Kovacheva replaced Justice Minister Margarita Popova, who was elected Bulgaria’s Vice President in October 2011, and remained member of Borisov’s cabinet until it resigned in 2013 six months before regular elections were to take place.
A commission composed of members of the advisory council to the ombudsman held a public hearing of the five nominees on Tuesday.
Kovacheva scored 22 points, six ahead of second-ranked incumbent deputy ombudsman Husein Ismail, according to a statement posted on the website of Bulgaria’s Ombudsman.
