Bulgaria: Ceremonies In Honor Of Vasil Levski Continue Today
Today, across the nation, memorial events will continue to honor the 151st anniversary of Vasil Levski's death
The shooting of Vazvishenie ("Summit"), a movie based on the award-winning book of Bulgarian writer Milen Ruskov, is to start in January, production crew have said.
Vazvishenie, one of the novels that won a European Union Prize for Literature in 2014, tells the story of two revolutionaries, practical Bacho Gicho and his credulous companion Asen, who in Ottoman-ruled Bulgaria in 1872 are tasked with handing out a letter to Vasil Levski, Bulgaria's national hero.
Enthused at the beginning, they come across a set of challenges after embarking on their journey in a colorful journey told in a crude "Bulgarian revival" language (in a hypothetical mix of dialects used before Bulgarian was officially "codified" by the newly independent Bulgarian state some years later).
Somewhere along the road, comedy (created by their dialogue and their way of thinking, but also by the language itself) turns into tragedy with developments that portray the Revival years, just before Bulgaria gained independence, in a more critical light - without a trace of nihilism, though.
Vazvishenie is supported the national film center, Sofia Municipality and Parliament.
Shooting is expected to continue throughout 2016.
