Inside Bulgaria's Easter Celebrations: Traditions Passed Through Generations
Today marks the joyous celebration of Easter, one of the most significant holidays in the Orthodox Christian calendar.
Bulgarian citizens and officials commemorated the victims of Friday's attacks in Paris by laying flowers and expressing their condolences in front of the French embassy in Sofia on Saturday.
Among the officials appearing in front of the embassy were Sofia Mayor Yordanka Fandakova and Parliament Speaker Tsetska Tsacheva, while Bulgarian President Rosen Plevneliev is also expected to lay flowers and express his condolences later on Saturday.
French ambassador to Bulgaria, His Excellency Xavier Lapeyre de Cabanes, said that the attacks were most likely due to the lasting engagement of France in the fight against Islamic State (IS).
According to him, these problems would not stop and the democratic societies had to accept the risks pertaining to freedom.
In an interview for private bTV station, the French ambassador expressed hope that Europe will come more united out of the latest attacks.
He was impressed by the solidarity Bulgarians had demonstrated towards France after the shooting at the offices of the Charlie Hebdo weekly and the subsequent attacks in Paris in January.
According to him, this showed that France was not alone and was on the right track.
In his opinion, France will not discontinue its involvement in the airstrikes against IS targets in Syria and Iraq.
His Excellency noted the good cooperation between Bulgarian and French authorities in the arrest of people returning to Europe for terrorism.
