Hungary has agreed to take over from Austria the investigation into the death of 71 migrants found in an abandoned truck near the Austria-Hungary border.

Vienna earlier asked for the step because it argued its work was more or less done, the Budapest Times reports.

Police suspect a migrant smuggling ring jointly run by Hungarian and Bulgarian citizens is to be held accountable.

Budapest authorities arrested early in September four Bulgarians and an Afghan man in relation to the incident.

As many as 59 men, 8 women, an infant girl and 3 boys aged 8-10 are the victims who are thought to have suffocated after being abandoned by the smugglers.
