Moscow would lose a lot if it destroyed its friendship with AnkaraTurkish President Tayyip Erdogan has said following recent violations of Turkey’s airspace close to the border with Syria by Russian combat aircraft.

Turkey would not remain patient in the face of violations of its airspace by Russian warplanes as “an attack on Turkey means an attack on NATO,” Erdogan told a joint news conference with Belgian Prime Minister Charles Michel in Brussels on Tuesday.

“Our positive relationship with Russia is known. But if Russia loses a friend like Turkey, with whom it is having extensive cooperation, it will lose a lot. It has to know this,” Erdogan said in his toughest words yet against violations of Turkey’s airspace by Russian warplanes flying bombing missions in Syria.

He also reiterated Ankara’s position that the regime of Syria’s President Bashar al Assad is causing serious damage to civilians and the region of the Middle East and criticized Russia and Iran for supporting and protecting Assad, according to Turkey’s dailysabah.com.
