The main opposition party in parliament – the Bulgarian Socialist Party (BSP) demanded the immediate resignation of Defence Minister Nikolay Nenchev over the proposal for launching joint air policing missions between the air forces of Bulgaria and its NATO allies.
This was announced in the parliamentary chamber on Thursday in a declaration by the deputy chairperson of the party's parliamentary group Atanas Merdzhanov, Darik radio informs.
The declaration was addressed to Nenchev himself, but also to Prime Minister Boyko Borisov and the parties supporting the coalition government.
This came in response to the proposal of the defence ministry on Wednesday for amendments to the Law on Defence and Armed Forces, which would allow NATO allies to assist in the policing of Bulgarian airspace.
Merdzhanov admitted that the dissolution of the Bulgarian air force, its army and borders has been a long-term process , but criticised Nenchev for his determination to complete it.
The socialist reminded that until recently Bulgaria took pride in its air force and its heroic achievements.
Therefore, according to him, Bulgaria should not allow for its capabilities to be ruined by the servility of an unprepared minister.
