Putin's Decree: Russia Eyes American Assets for Confiscation
Russia is preparing to identify American assets for potential confiscation in retaliation for any seizure of its own assets in the United States
Russian President Vladimir Putin and his US counterpart Barack Obama will meet on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly session which will be held on September 28.
The information was confirmed both by Russian and US officials on Thursday, TASS news agency reports.
Despite their profound differences over the conflicts in Ukraine and Syria, the two sides will attempt to reach progress on the high-level dialogue.
This will be their first face-to-face meeting in nearly a year, their last encounter being at the APEC summit in China in November 2014.
Since then they have held occasional telephone conversations, their last one reportedly taking place after the conclusion of the Iran nuclear deal.
The meeting will come as the US is increasingly concerned about the build-up of Russian military presence in Syria and the prospect of Moscow launching unilateral airstrikes against Islamic State (IS).
A meeting has also been scheduled between Putin and Japanese Prime Minister, Shinzo Abe, which is expected to take place on the same day.
Putin, who will deliver a speech at the UN General Assembly on September 28, is also planning to meet UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon.
