Russian forces are reportedly making advances towards the Ukrainian village of Lyptsi near Kharkiv
The European Union will extend sanctions against Russian and Ukrainian individuals and companies accused of backing pro-Russian rebels in eastern Ukraine by six months, AFP and Interfax reported on Wednesday, citing diplomats.
"There is a political agreement; (officials) agreed to extend the sanctions for six months to March next year," AFP quoted one source as saying following a meeting of the ambassadors of the member states to the EU.
According to the sources, the 28 nations of the bloc are expected to formally approve the extension before the sanctions expire on September 15.
The sanctions stem from Russia’s ongoing involvement in the conflict in Ukraine. They target 150 people, including senior Russian advisors, lawmakers, and Ukrainian rebel leaders, plus 37 companies and other entities.
