Egypt’s State Prosecutor Dies after Bomb Attack on His Convoy
Egypt's public prosecutor Hisham Barakat has died from wounds sustained in a bomb attack on his convoy, AP reported on Monday.
Barakat, 65, was wounded when a car bomber attacked his convoy as it was leaving his home in Cairo neighbourhood of Heliopolis for his office on Monday morning.
Barakat died in a Cairo hospital after undergoing a critical surgery, AP said. The extent of his injuries was not reported.
He is the highest-ranking Egyptian official to be assassinated since the ouster of Islamist President Mohammed Morsi two years ago.
Judges and other officials of the judiciary and the security services in Egypt have increasingly been targeted by Islamist militants opposed to President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi and apparently angered by hefty prison sentences imposed on members of the now-outlawed Muslim Brotherhood, AFP said in its coverage of the news.
A little-known group calling itself the "Giza Popular Resistance" had claimed responsibility for the bombing on its Facebook page but withdrew the claim from the page several hours later, according to AFP.
