Poland Votes Duda in Presidential Elections
Leader of the Polish Conservative party Andrzej Duda has won the Presidential elections in the country, held Sunday.
He secured the majority of votes with 53%, thus defeating current President Bronislaw Komorowski, who got 47% public trust.
The final results are to be announced later Monday evening.
"I respect your choice," Komorowski stated upon the announcement of the preliminary results, as quoted by Reuters. "I wish my challenger a successful presidency."
Meanwhile, the win of Duda and his Law and Justice (RZS) opposition party has been seen by a number of analysts as a sign of a possible change of power in the next parliamentary elections in Poland. Additionally, this has been deemed the first defeat of the Civic Platform party in the post-communist history of Poland.
Over the past decade the country quicklkly turned into Eastern Europe's most powerful economy, attracting production sites and various investments on its territory.
However, as it appears, a number of citizens believe that power and resources are unevenly distributed.
"Economic growth? For the average citizen it is hardly perceptible," stated Zbigniew Pela, 53, a railway worker who voted Duda on the Sunday elections, Reuters reported. "They create good living conditions for some social groups, who have their businesses, and not for ordinary citizens."
The Presidential institution in the country has limited power, as the President is the head of the armed forces and has vfeto power over legislative amendments.
