Bulgaria and Italy will deepen their cooperation in order to deal with the migratory pressure, which is affecting the two countries.
This was agreed at a meeting between Bulgarian Prime Minister Boyko Borisov and his Italian counterpart Matteo Renzi on Friday, the government's press service informs.
The two leaders met in Riga, where they are attending the Eastern Partnership summit, which is taking place on Thursday and Friday.
Borisov and Renzi noted that both Bulgaria's southeastern border and the Mediterranean are subject to heightened migratory pressure.
The two prime ministers agreed that only through joint efforts the two countries will successfully tackle the increasing influx towards their borders as well as fight human trafficking.
During their conversation, Borisov pointed to the successfully held operation in Sofia on Wednesday, when 150 illegal immigrants and two foreigners organising illegal migration were detained.
Among the other topics of discussion were the increase of the commercial exchange between Bulgaria and Italy and the excellent cooperation between the special services and the police forces of the two countries in the fight against organised crime.
In line with the commitments of Renzi on May 23 and 24, when Borisov will be on a visit to Rome, the two decided to hold their meeting in Riga.
The Italian PM accepted the invitation of Borisov for a visit to Sofia, which is likely to take place immediately after that of EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Police Federica Mogherini.
