The Union of Bulgarian Autho-drivers (SBA) has now shown support for the national campaign H2Obicham. The organization has endorsed the initiative on account of the great importance that good hydration plays when a person is driving.
It has further stated its participation in the upcoming actions of the campaign that is aiming at informing the largest possible number of people on the uses of healthy hydration.
A research conducted by Loughborough University in Australia has established that drivers who don't consume enough water, are prone to the same number of mistakes on the road as people under the influence of alcohol. The study has been quoted in a number of renowned publications, The Independent and The Telegraph among many.
Using a laboratory-based simulator, researchers at the university tested the reactions of drivers at various levels of hydration. The number of road accidents at normal levels of hydration measured were 47, but the number more than doubled (101) when they were dehydrated.
“Anecdotal evidence suggests that many drivers avoid drinking on long journeys to minimize bathroom stops, yet we know that even mild hydration can cause symptoms such as headache, tiredness and lethargy,'' stated Jane Holdsworth, Director of the European Hydration Institute (EHI) as quoted by Loughborough University 's official website. ''Driver error is by far the largest cause of road traffic accidents and the EHI wanted to test whether mild hydration had an impact on the incidence of common driver errors.”
