Germany Urges Swift EU Accession for Western Balkan Countries
German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock has issued a compelling call for the expedited integration of candidate countries from the Western Balkans into the European Union
British Parliament was formally dissolved on Monday as the campaign for the forthcoming general election in the UK was officially unveiled.
British Prime Minister David Cameron held an audience with Queen Elizabeth II at Buckingham Palace, after which he announced that the general election will take place on May 7.
Cameron pointed to the achievements of his coalition government in the past five years, particularly its long-term economic plan, which increased employment and raised living standards.
The Conservative leader pointed to himself or his main rival Labour leader Ed Miliband as the next occupier of 10 Downing Street, the BBC reports.
According to him, the British electors “face a stark choice” between himself and Miliband, dismissing Labour's pre-election promises as “economic chaos”.
Earlier, Miliband hurled similar criticism at the Conservatives' policy on the EU as posing a “clear danger” to UK business.
The leaders of the other main contenders, the Liberal Democrats and the UK Independence Party (UKIP), respectively Nick Clegg and Nigel Farage also made statements on the start of the campaign.
Analysts have already labelled the election as the most “unpredictable” in a generation as a lot of domestic and international issues are at stake.
The election is vital not only for the UK, but also for Europe due to the proposed referendum on the UK's continued membership to the EU, which Cameron had promised to hold in case he is reelected.
The issues that are most likely to dominate the campaign include the economy and spending cuts, EU membership, the future of the National Health Service (NHS) and immigration.
