Forecasts of Bulgaria’s Tourism Ministry for the 2015 summer season point to a 3-4% growth in tourist numbers, according to Minister Nikolina Angelkova.
In a Thursday interview for the Bulgarian National Television (BNT), Angelkova informed that forecasts indicated a decrease in the number of Russian and Ukrainian tourists, which, however, was to be compensated by an anticipated 40% growth from markets such as Lithuania, Latvia, and Belarus.
She said that the number of German tourists was expected to increase by 5%, while the number of Greek and Serbian tourists was to go up by 10%.
Angelkova noted that arrivals from Turkey, Poland, and the Czech Republic were also expected to increase.
She pointed out that the simplified visa regime for citizens of Ukraine and Russia was in force, adding that the measure was expected to downsize the projected decrease in arrivals from these countries.
Angelkova said that the number of tourists from the UK was expected to go up by 2%.
Highlighting the British market as a main tourist-generating market for Bulgaria, she said that a tourism attach? would be dispatched to the country.
She reiterated that the Tourism Ministry backed the project for a second gondola lift in the mountain resort Bansko.
Angelkova underscored that the authorities had to stay focused on developing infrastructure in all of Bulgaria’s winter resorts, including small towns in Stara Planina.
She suggested that the promotional campaign for the 50 lesser known tourist sites in Bulgaria had attracted substantial interest, adding that Bulgarian municipalities were popularized through it.
To illustrate her point, Angelkova said that the fortress Castra ad Montanesium in the northwestern town of Montana was an excellent example of an opportunity for the overall revitalization of the region provided by tourism.
