Solar Fury: The Geomagnetic Storm of 2024
A potent geomagnetic storm, the most formidable in two decades, has struck, instigated by successive coronal mass ejections from the Sun
Westinghouse Electric Company said on Monday it is donating BGN 17,000 (EUR 8,500) for the reconstruction of a kindergarten in the Bulgarian town of Mizia hit by flash floods last summer.
“We are glad that this donation will help reopen the kindergarten which has been disused since last year,” Westinghouse manager for Bulgaria Ivan Pironkov said in a statement, adding the company has always been committed to social responsibility projects in the regions where it operates.
The donation will enable Mizia municipality to complete basic reconstruction works and purchase equipment needed to reopen the facility, said Yovka Cherganska, headmistress of Detelina kindergarten.
Before river Skat flooded Mizia in August 2014, 32 children used the kindergarten. So far they have to travel another kindergarten located farther away, awaiting for Detelina to be repaired.
Mizia is located some 18 km to the southeast of the town of Kozloduy, home to Bulgaria’s sole nuclear power plant of the same name.
Last year, Westingouse signed an agreement with the Bulgarian Energy Holding giving the US-based nuclear engineering firm a 30% stake in a project company that aims to build a new 1,000 megawatt reactor at the power plant using the Westinghouse AP1000 technology.
The project is expected to create new jobs in Vratsa District where both Mizia and Kozloduy are located. The district has one of the highest unemployment rates in Bulgaria.
