The Minister of Education Todor Tanev has compared the content of the schoolbooks to that of a powder keg.

With this metaphor Tanev explained on private station bTV why Bulgarian pupils often could not understand what was written in the textbooks.

The Minister commented that he had come across awkward cases in the schoolbooks, pointing to needless formulas included in the textbooks.

He said that it was one thing to memorise a historical date, but it required a completely different set of skills in order to be able to assess a historical event.

According to Tanev, secondary education has been brought to the level of higher education due to the complexity of the subject matter and terminology present in the textbooks.

The Education Minister announced that in order for these multiple problems within the education system to be solved, new legislation should be passed.

He commented the draft law on pre-school and school education, which had been tabled in the National Assembly by former Deputy Minister of Education and current Member of Parliament Milena Damyanova on November 21.

The bill had been drafted during Damyanova's mandate in 2012, but it was not adopted due to the premature resignation of the first government of Boyko Borisov in 2013.

One of the corrections to the draft law is that the introduction of compulsory pre-school education for four-year olds has been dropped due to debates in society and parents' disagreement.

Tanev dismissed the statements that the main ruling party Citizens for European Development of Bulgaria (GERB) has tabled the draft law without coordinating it with him.

In conclusion, he declared himself for the introduction of completely new models of education.
