A woman is in critical condition in hospital after setting herself on fire in front of President’s office in central Sofia shortly before 3 pm on Monday.
According to BGNES news outlet, 38-year old Lidia P. doused herself with a flammable liquid, most probably petrol, before setting herself on fire. There was no independent confirmation of the woman's identity.
The woman was taken to Pirogov emergency hospital in very serious condition.
BNR radio station quoted the head of the Burn Clinic at Pirogov Hospital Prof. Ognyan Hadzhiiski that nearly 90% of the woman’s body surface area was affected by severe burns.
Her motives remain unknown.
Prof. Hadzhiiski told reporters that according to the woman’s husband she was worried about the future of her child. He didn’t elaborate.
Guards on duty at the President’s office and the driver of a nearby car helped put down the flames before an ambulance arrived to take the woman to hospital.
President Rosen Plevneliev was holding consultations about forming a government with representative of nationalist Patriotic Front in the building when the accident took place.
There were six cases of self-immolation in Bulgaria last year. Some of them coincided with mass protests against power price hikes and poverty that eventually led to the resignation of the government of Prime Minister Boyko Borisov in February 2013.
