No winner has been selected in the competition for the “13 Centuries Bulgaria” monument in front of the National Palace of Culture (NDK) in Sofia.
Despite the fact that none of the nine projects was selected as a winner, the monument built in 1981 to commemorate the 1300th anniversary of the First Bulgarian Empire will most probably be moved from the public garden in front of NDK, with the plaques of the 1st and the 6th Sofia Infantry Regiments will be restored in its place, according to reports of mediapool.bg.
The proposal for restoring the plaques is to be presented for discussion by the Sofia Municipal Council by the group of municipal councilors from GERB (Citizens for European Development of Bulgaria), according to Orlin Ivanov, municipal councilor and member of the jury panel for the competition.
Ivanov told Mediapool Friday that GERB would submit the proposal after trying to achieve consensus among all political forces.
Right-wing parties Democrats for Strong Bulgaria (DSB) and the Union of Democratic Forces (UDF) have been calling for the removal of the monument for a long time, which coincides with the opinion of 80% of the respondents in a poll on the website of the Sofia Municipality
The Bulgarian Socialist Party (BSP) has not presented its stance on the matter.
