Bulgarian President Rosen Plevneliev will pay a two-day working visit to Baku.
The delegation headed by Plevneliev also includes Vasil Shtonov, caretaker Minister of Economy and Energy, according to the President’s press office.
On September 19, Plevneliev will meet with his Azerbaijani counterpart Ilham Aliyev.
After the face-to-face meeting of Plevneliev and Aliyev, there will be talks between the delegations of Bulgaria and Azerbaijan.
On September 20, Plevneliev will take part in the groundbreaking ceremony for the Southern Gas Corridor together with representatives of Albania, UK, Georgia, Greece, Italy, US, Turkey and Montenegro.
The agenda of the visit to Baku also includes bilateral talks with Azerbaijan on securing the diversification of gas supplies for Bulgaria, Southeast Europe, and the EU, as well as on the implementation of joint gas projects.
The construction of the Southern Gas Corridor will enable Bulgaria Southeast Europe, and the EU, to achieve gas supply diversification, thereby boosting the security of gas supplies and alleviating the energy dependence of Bulgaria and the region.
The implementation of the projects under the Southern Gas Corridor will provide the route for the negotiated gas deliveries from Azerbaijan’s Shah Deniz 2 gas field to Bulgaria via Turkey and Greece.
The shipments of gas from the Shah Deniz 2 gas field will create competition between Bulgaria’s gas suppliers, thereby helping the country achieve gas market liberalization and secure better prices for local consumers.
Bulgaria’s gas grid interconnection projects with Greece (IGB) and Turkey (ITB) are part of the Southern Gas Corridor infrastructure.
In autumn, a final investment decision is to be taken on the construction of the Komotini-Dimitrovgrad gas grid interconnection.
The Bulgaria – Greece gas grid interconnection is to be completed in 2016.
