The Bulgarian caretaker government appointed by President Rosen Plevneliev has assumed office at a special ceremony on Wednesday.

Plevneliev, who introduced the members of the interim cabinet on Tuesday, has also signed a decree to dissolve Parliament and to set October 5 as the date for the early elections.

A ceremony due to begin at 10:00 local time (08:00) at Bulgaria's Council of Ministers started after a thirty-minute delay after ministers from the outgoing and incoming governments reportedly met to exchange private comments on the transition of power, according to the Bulgarian National Television.

Outgoing Prime Minister Plamen Oresharski hailed his cabinet's achievements, stressing it had managed to improve business climate, allocate EU funding more efficiently than the previous government did and introduce key measures in social policy, also creating 50 000 jobs in just fourteen months.

After his speech prof. Georgi Bliznashki, who will be Bulgaria's head of government in the next months, reiterated commitment to reforms which the President outlined on Tuesday.

Bliznashki added his government wished to create a "stable environment" in Bulgaria prior to the October 5 early elections.

Political leaders agreed on a snap poll after the ruling socialist-liberal coalition collapsed in June and Plamen Oresharski's government stepped down a month later.

The President named Bliznashki as the new Prime Minister and announced he would have four deputies who will be in charge of economic affairs, social affairs, EU funding and justice, internal affairs and security, respectively.

Bulgaria's latest interim cabinet is the second of which President Plevneliev has been in charge and the fifth in Bulgaria's contemporary history.
