President Rosen Plevneliev has called the Consultative Council for National Security in relation to the ongoing political situation and the looming early elections.

The Council, with operates as an assembly convened upon request by the President, is to discuss the date for the upcoming vote.

Other ongoing affairs are however also on focus, with the choice of a Bulgarian EU Commissioner, issues around the South Stream pipeline, European funding and the need for reforms to be part of the agenda.

Plevneliev's latest move follows a statement by ruling Bulgarian Socialist Party (BSP)'s leader Sergey Stanishev, who on Tuesday described early elections in end-July as "feasible and necessary" for a new government to take control and find a way out of the political crisis.

Stanishev also believes the government should resign after the next no-confidence motion introduced by the opposition is voted in the days to come.

The President also shed light on his position about an interim cabinet which some argue should take charge before elections, saying that was not an "pressing" issue.
