Bulgarian authorities have intercepted crimes which would have incurred damage worth BGN 145 M to the state budget, according to Interior Minister Tsvetlin Yovchev.
A large part of the tax inspections have been wrapped up and the damage is still being estimated, Yovchev said Friday in an interview for Trud daily.
"The Interior Ministry assists officials of the National Revenue Agency (NRA) in the oversight of high fiscal risk goods. Joint inspections and the imposition of precautionary measures in cases of infringements are still underway. Their total number since the beginning of 2013 stands at 2283, with 1112 statements of offence drawn up so far," Yovchev stated.
He informed that a total of 1123 prosecution files and signals had been processed and a total of 321 pre-trial proceedings had been opened over the same period.
Yovchev made clear that the work of the State Agency for National Security (DANS) had contributed to opening another 23 pre-trial proceedings, 128 inspections of prosecutors, and 4 investigation files related to tax crime.
He also informed that a unit called "Counteracting Crime in the Financial-Credit System" had been created to boost the efficiency of control at the National Police Chief Directorate of the Interior Ministry.
Yovchev explained that the Sofia police directorate and the district directorates in Plovdiv, Varna and Burgas also had units specializing in counteracting tax crime.
