European Parliament has called on the EU's Commission to "seriously consider" the possibility of freezing European funds for Bulgaria.
The proposal was part of a report prepared by the EU's budget committee on the implementation of 2012 EU budget, Bulgarian agency Mediapool has reported.
A special part of the document is dedicated to Bulgaria, wherein a European Popular Party MEP warns of the dangers constituted by last monitoring paper on Bulgaria, a text published this January.
"Lack of progress", "ongoing widespread corruption and difficulty in delegating responsibility and correcting mistakes" were among the findings of the report made by the European Commission under the Mechanism for Cooperation and Verification.
EP has therefore suggested that EC should "take a decisive stance" and "seriously review whether using the Union's funds is possible under these circumstances".
Ingeborg Graessle, EPP groups's coordinator at the budgetary committee, explained that "no reforms and progress" could lead to halting EU funds.
Citing the EU's financial problems and debates over fund allocation, Graessle added that "Bulgaria risks losing money, as other [countries] will get them". Graessle blamed Bulgaria's "lack of political culture following 50 years of communism" for its current situation.
